Airway Support for Sleep Apnea
Without Negative Effects on Teeth and Jaw

Sleep apnea is a serious health condition. Many affected individuals today are prescribed so-called “night splints” or mandibular advancement devices, which are intended to prevent the lower jaw from falling backward during sleep and narrowing the airways. These appliances can be effective; however, they also carry dental risks.

Our goal is to inform you about all available options and to find low-side-effect solutions that both improve sleep and protect your teeth and jaw alignment in the long term.

What happens in sleep apnea?

During sleep, the following occur:

  • breathing pauses
  • loud snoring
  • repeated arousal reactions
  • phases of oxygen deficiency

This leads to daytime fatigue, concentration problems, and in the long term can promote cardiovascular disease.

Mandibular advancement devices can help by gently positioning the lower jaw forward, thereby keeping the airway open.

Possible effects on teeth and jaw

Not every appliance is orthodontically neutral. Especially with long-term use, undesirable effects may occur:

  • changes in the bite position
  • forward tipping of the lower front teeth (flare effect)
  • imbalance between upper and lower jaw
  • pressure on the incisors
  • shifts within the dental arch

What we can do for you

1. Individual analysis of your dental and jaw situation

We assess whether a sleep appliance in your case is:

  • sensible,
  • neutral,
  • or potentially risky for tooth alignment.

2. Advice on safe alternatives

There are different materials, designs, and techniques—some significantly gentler than others. We show which models have minimal side effects.

3. Collaboration with sleep medicine specialists

If needed, we arrange for:

  • medical diagnostics (e.g. polysomnography)
  • medical supervision
  • coordinated therapy planning

4. Orthodontic corrections for malocclusions

If sleep apnea is partly caused by a jaw misalignment, a targeted orthodontic treatment in combination with a maxillofacial surgical procedure can achieve significant functional improvements.

Our standard: airway therapy without compromising dental health

A well-functioning night appliance must not lead to:

  • teeth shifting
  • front teeth moving outward
  • the bite becoming unstable
  • a later orthodontic treatment being made more difficult

We therefore provide thorough and honest consultation so that both the airway and tooth alignment remain equally protected.
